Hi there! Welcome back to our “On the Road with RDs” series, which — like everything else in 2020 — is a little different because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Although our Registered Dietitians aren’t traveling, they’re still virtually teaching our communities and continuing their education in the wide world of nutrition. This time, we’re joining Jessica Holler after her presentation for Hebron Academy in Maine.
Talking to students about nutrition is one of my favorite things, and I was excited to be invited to present to a freshman nutrition class at Hebron Academy. The students had already spent a week learning about topics such as why nutrition is important, macronutrients and micronutrients, and hydration, so I was able to focus on less technical information.
I filled them in about what a dietitian is and does, the benefits of nutrition beyond fuel for the body, The SAGE Spotlight Program®, and food and nutrition trends. My favorite part was discussing nutrition in the media. It’s confusing to be bombarded daily with information from so many different sources, especially when they contradict each other. I gave the students some tips and tools they can use to analyze and interpret what they see and hear the way a dietitian would.
Even though I couldn’t be there in person, I was grateful the students kept their cameras on so I could see them and connect. I can’t wait to do it again — virtually or in person when it’s safe to travel!
